Every Congregation has a beginning. Knightstown's United Methodist Church began in 1824. A Methodist Church was organized in West Liberty, southwest of Knightstown, IN. Reverend Thomas Rice preached the first sermon in the home of Samuel Cary. With the routing of the "National Road" (U.S. 40) through Knightstown in 1827, West Liberty ceased to be a trading post. The Methodist congregation moved to Knightstown, with their first building located on the southeast corner of Jefferson and Jackson Street. The land was donated by Waitstill M. Cary. A new brick church building was erected on the current grounds of KUMC and that structure was dedicated on August 3, 1856. The first parsonage was built in 1873. Today, that parsonage serves as the Communications Center for Knightstown UMC. By 1880, membership grew to almost 300 members and they had outgrown the church. A new church was built and dedicated on December 27, 1885. Since 1885, many changes have taken place to our church. We've added a basement to the original church (1921), Fellowship Hall and the Education Wing (1971), a new parsonage (1991) and new air conditioning and heating for the Sanctuary and basement (2003).
